Shanghai Breaks 99-Year-Old Heat Record

In a remarkable meteorological event, Shanghai, the largest city and global financial hub of China, has set a new heat record. The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau reported that from August 6 to August 30, 2023, the city experienced 25 consecutive days with temperatures exceeding 35°C (95°F).

This heat record was broken 99 years after it was initially set in 1926. The new record surpassed the previous record of 24 consecutive days, which was also set in Shanghai. The temperatures from June 6 to August 30 surpassed the previous record, making the heat wave particularly prolonged this year.

Despite the heat wave in Shanghai, several provinces in China suffered from flooding and typhoons this year. These incidents were separate from the heat wave in Shanghai and did not affect the heat record set between June 6 and August 30. The flooding and typhoons resulted in dozens of fatalities this year.

The widespread heat above 35°C (95°F) in eastern China was one of the factors contributing to the high-heat warnings issued in July. China issued high-heat warnings for 754 provinces, cities, and counties in July, with many regions recording temperatures above 40°C (104°F). Much of eastern China, the country's most populous region, experienced widespread heat above 35°C (95°F) in July.

The high-heat warnings were due to temperatures exceeding 40°C (104°F) in many regions. The heat record in Shanghai was broken after 25 consecutive days with temperatures exceeding 35°C (95°F). The report of the new heat record was made by the state media on Saturday, August 31, 2023.

Shanghai, as the financial center of China, is a bustling city known for its skyscrapers and economic power. The city's new heat record underscores the increasing challenges posed by climate change to urban areas, particularly in the context of China's rapid urbanization. The city's authorities are now taking steps to address the issue, including increasing public awareness about heat safety and implementing measures to cool down the city's urban environment.
