Shooting victim at a Minnesota church queries the physician: "Could you offer a prayer with me?"

In a tragic turn of events, a shooting occurred inside a Minneapolis church during the first Mass of the school year, claiming at least two lives and leaving 20 people wounded, mostly children. The shooter, identified as Robin Westman, once attended Annunciation Catholic School.

Robin Westman, whose gender identity was not clear, carried a pump-action shotgun, a 9 mm pistol, and a semiautomatic rifle during the attack. Federal officials referred to Westman as transgender. In the weeks before the attack, journals written in Cyrillic—a centuries-old script still used in Slavic countries—revealed Westman's plans, including running drills at a shooting range and borrowing money from family to buy guns.

The shooting has renewed calls for gun safety legislation. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey decried hatred being directed at "our transgender community." Frey emphasised the need for understanding, empathy, and action to address the root causes of such incidents.

Westman's connections to the school and church are clear. Westman's mother, who worked for the parish before retiring in 2021, is believed to have signed a petition in 2020 for a name change from Robert to Robin.

The aftermath of the shooting was chaotic. Matthew Stommes, a parent, witnessed flashes of gunfire and children screaming and covering their ears. Some parents, including Stommes, carried injured children out of the church as emergency responders arrived.

Doctors and first responders in Minneapolis called the students and teachers at Annunciation Catholic School heroes for protecting each other and following their active shooter training. A pediatric critical care nurse at Hennepin Healthcare arrived at work to help treat shooting victims, only to find out her 12-year-old daughter, Sophia Forchas, was among the wounded. Sophia underwent emergency surgery and was in critical condition, according to a hospital spokesperson.

The shooting has left the community in shock and grief. The parents of 10-year-old Harper Moyski want to see their daughter's memory bring about changes when it comes to gun violence and mental health issues. They hope that this tragedy will serve as a catalyst for a safer, more understanding world.

As the investigation continues, the person who previously attended Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis and is possibly connected to the shooting incident is not publicly identified. The community, however, stands united in their quest for justice and healing.
