Rahul Dravid, one of India's top-ranked cricketers and a former international player, recently shared his insights on the impact of height on batting in cricket during a podcast appearance.

Dravid, who retired from international cricket in 2012, emphasised that his playing style was not dictated by his height. Instead, he played in a manner that was most comfortable for him, despite being slightly taller than some of the game's shortest players.

In the podcast, Dravid mentioned several famous short-heighted cricketers, including Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Ricky Ponting, and Don Bradman. He acknowledged that in the past, shorter players had an advantage due to their lower centre of gravity, which gave them better control over their shots.

However, Dravid also noted that the style of play in cricket is changing to favour taller batters. He explained that in the modern game, the emphasis on power and hitting sixes is making the reach of taller batters an advantage. Physics plays a role in this advantage, as taller batters have a longer lever to generate more power in their shots.

Dravid highlighted that taller batters like Yuvraj Singh, Kieron Pollard, Chris Gayle, and others have been equally successful in cricket. He also mentioned that Virat Kohli, who is relatively short-ish among cricketers, has managed to carve out a successful career despite his height.

Despite the advantage of taller batters, Dravid believes that shorter batters still have an advantage in cricket. He explained that shorter batters can move around the crease more quickly, which can help them to play defensive shots effectively.

Dravid also admired the balance and elegance of Sachin Tendulkar, who, despite his short stature, was known for his technical skills and ability to play shots all around the ground. He also mentioned that Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag, who were relatively shorter batsmen, were considered extraordinarily talented.
