Sifan Hassan and Hailemaryam Kiros claim victory in the Sydney Marathon, setting a new standard for prize money.
In the bustling city of Sydney, the annual marathon took place, with two standout performances from Hailemaryam Kiros and Sifan Hassan.
In the men's race, a group of seven runners, including Kiros and Addisu Gobena, broke away from the pack around the 32 km mark. This group eventually pulled away irretrievably, leaving the rest of the field behind.
At the halfway point, Eliud Kipchoge, the Olympic marathon champion in 2016 and 2021, was part of the leading group. However, around the 32 km mark, Kipchoge was dropped from the group. Despite this setback, Kipchoge managed to finish ninth in the race.
Hailemaryam Kiros, an Ethiopian runner, capitalised on this opportunity and made his move less than a kilometer from the finish line to win the men's race. His victory broke the previous record set by Brimin Kipkorir last year (2:06:18), with Kiros setting a new men's course record of 2:06:06. Addisu Gobena finished second, 10 seconds behind Kiros.
In the women's race, Dutch Olympic champion Sifan Hassan built a 40-second lead at the 35 km mark. She maintained this lead until the finish line, smashing the women's course record with a time of 2:18:22. Workenesh Edesa, who won the race last year, finished third this year.
Brigid Kosgei, the former Olympic champion in the 42.195 km event, finished second in the women's race, but was unable to challenge Hassan's dominance.
Interestingly, the winners of the marathon races in Sydney in 2023 are not mentioned in the available search results. However, Susannah Scaroni and Sifan Hassan are noted as winners of the Sydney Marathon in 2025, with Hassan setting a course record. No time records for the 2023 winners were found in the results.
Both Kiros's win in the men's category and Hassan's victory in the women's race were impressive displays of endurance and speed, cementing their places as formidable competitors in the world of marathon running.
