Brandenburg, the region renowned for its apple production, is currently facing challenges due to unpredictable weather conditions. The apple industry, which is the region's most important fruit sector, spanning over 771 hectares, is looking to politics for support in implementing measures to address these issues.

In 2024, Brandenburg experienced a year of frost and hail, causing significant damage to the apple crops. The current year's apple season, however, is beginning optimistically, with BB Brandenburger Obst GmbH, a key player in the apple industry located in MΓ€rkisch-Oderland, hosting the season opening in Wesendahl.

The Gardeners' Association Berlin-Brandenburg, another influential entity in the region, is advocating for political measures to secure businesses in the apple industry. Their suggestions include insurance solutions and investment promotion for weather protection. This proactive approach is a response to the increased risk of late frost damage due to climate change, a challenge that the apple industry continues to face.

The most popular apple varieties in Brandenburg are Elstar, Pinova, and Jonagold. Around 30 apple varieties are available in stores across the region. The estimated apple harvest for the current year is approximately 21,300 tonnes, a significant increase from the previous year's harvest of around 3,200 tonnes.

The apple season opening in Brandenburg serves as a platform to discuss the challenges faced by the industry and seek solutions. BB Brandenburger Obst GmbH's involvement and commitment to the apple industry, as demonstrated by hosting the season opening, is a testament to their resolve to overcome these challenges and ensure the continued success of the industry.

The apple industry's resilience is evident, and with political support and innovative solutions, it is hoped that Brandenburg's apple industry will continue to thrive and provide the region with its beloved fruit. The Gardeners' Association's announcement of the start of the apple season with the expectation of a significant recovery is a positive sign for the future of Brandenburg's apple industry.
