DIY Pet-Friendly Carpet Deodorizer Recipe

Are you tired of persistent pet odours in your carpets? Look no further than this easy-to-make, pet-friendly DIY carpet deodorizer.

Materials - Baking soda - Essential oil(s)

Equipment - A dredge shaker (or an old plastic parmesan cheese container or mason jar)

The recipe for this homemade carpet freshener is simple and effective. Gather pure baking soda, essential oil, and your chosen equipment. For the essential oil, you have the freedom to choose your favourite scent or opt for safe options for pets, such as lavender, chamomile, or frankincense.

To make the deodorizer, fill the shaker halfway with baking soda, add a few drops of essential oil, refill the shaker, and let it sit for a day or two to allow the essential oil to be fully absorbed by the baking soda.

To use the DIY carpet deodorizer, sprinkle it on the carpet or rug and let it sit for about 10 minutes before vacuuming up immediately. For tougher odours, you can leave the mixture on the carpet for up to 24 hours.

This homemade carpet freshener is safe for children and is particularly effective for picking up wet spills or grease that hasn't been cleaned yet. However, it's important to note that this DIY carpet deodorizer is not a stain remover. For pet stains or stains in general, consider using a homemade stain remover or learning how to remove pet stains from carpets.

When using this product around pets, ensure safety by sectioning off the treated area so they cannot access the mixture. Certain essential oils are not safe for pets, so avoid oils like tea tree, cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, peppermint, citrus oils, and wintergreen.

The main ingredient, baking soda, can be purchased at Costco for under $7 for a 13.5 pound bag. This DIY carpet deodorizer is all natural and does not contain toxic chemicals, making it a great choice for a fresh-smelling, pet-friendly home.
