Simulation for Youth: Experiencing Firefighting for Teenagers

In the heart of the city of Arnsberg, the youth fire brigades, consisting of two units, recently held a training exercise to simulate a vegetation fire scenario. The event, which took place on a designated area within the city, aimed to prepare young recruits for forest and area fires, a growing concern due to increasingly dry summers.

The Arnsberg Youth Fire Brigade boasts over 100 active members, aged between 10 and 17, who are all eager to learn and serve. The brigade is overseen by the Arnsberg City Fire Department, ensuring a robust and structured training programme for its young members.

The exercise began with the arrival of the youth fire brigades, each accompanied by several fire engines. The teams quickly set up an independent water supply and, under the guidance of their instructors, tackled the "fire" tactically.

The session was more than just a practical exercise. It also included theoretical training and technical instruction, designed to enhance the technical competence of the youth and strengthen their team spirit and sense of responsibility.

Christian Karla, the youth fire chief, emphasised the importance of familiarising young personnel with vegetation fire procedures. He noted that the exercise was an exciting experience for many of the youth, further confirming that they had chosen the right path by joining the fire department.

The exercise ended after about two hours with a debriefing, allowing the participants to reflect on their performance and learn from the experience. The Arnsberg Youth Fire Brigade's exercises are a vital part of their training, designed to equip the young firefighters with the skills and confidence needed for active fire service.
