In an unprecedented joint operation, the Criminal Investigation Unit 22 of Oberhausen Police and the Duisburg Public Prosecutor's Office, along with their Bulgarian counterparts, conducted coordinated simultaneous raids on the early morning of Tuesday, May 13th. The operation was aimed at a suspected gang of Bulgarian nationals who have been under investigation since December 2024.

The gang, primarily operating in cities such as Oberhausen, Duisburg, Essen, Mülheim an der Ruhr, and other Ruhr area cities, has been linked to over 30 cases of pickpocketing, primarily targeting elderly or vulnerable individuals on public transport.

During the raids, several arrest warrants were executed, but the arrest warrants against the Bulgarian citizens in Duisburg on the morning of May 13, 2023, were rejected due to lack of concrete evidence or substantiated grounds for the accusations.

In Duisburg, a Duisburg apartment used as a hideout was searched. Evidence, including a substantial amount of cash, was seized during the search.

The Bulgarian authorities were involved in the execution of arrest warrants and searches, and the investigators expressed gratitude towards them for their assistance. The cooperation between Oberhausen Police's Criminal Investigation Unit 22 and the Duisburg Public Prosecutor's Office is ongoing, with the investigation continuing to progress.

The suspects are aged between 37 and 62, and no new cities targeted by the gang were mentioned in this paragraph. No new evidence or seizures were mentioned, and no new cases linked to the gang were reported.

The responsible investigators thank the Bulgarian authorities for their professional cooperation and expressed optimism about the ongoing investigation. The Duisburg Public Prosecutor's Office also expressed appreciation for the support received during the operation.
