In our city, a unique training programme for assistant sports instructors has been completed, aimed at strengthening social participation and self-determination for individuals with intellectual disabilities or mental illness. Led by Johanna Ochs (SOHe) and Mark Bornhage (Occupational Safety bdks), the training was offered in cooperation with Special Olympics Hessen (SOHe).

The goal of bdks, a church-based diaconal value network, is to foster diversity in life. With over 3,000 employees, both with and without disabilities, bdks offers a variety of housing options, workplaces, educational and qualification opportunities, and daily structuring.

The assistant sports instructors, now numbering 14 from various bdks facilities in our city, have been trained as first responders and have learned essential skills such as working effectively with trainers or coaches, designing a good warm-up, considering safety in training, setting up and dismantling sports equipment, and acting fairly and justly in sports.

The training programme covered topics like the role of assistant sports instructors at sporting events, planning a sports festival, relaxation games, and mobilization exercises. To ensure continuous learning and networking, the assistant sports instructors will meet every three months for exchange and further training.

A highlight of the training was a workshop on healthy eating for people with disabilities, which is unique in Hesse. bdks' commitment to inclusion is evident in every aspect of their work, as expressed in their claim, "Diversity in Life."
