Chicago Sky Facing Turbulent End to Season Amidst Controversy

The Chicago Sky, who are expected to miss the postseason this year, are facing internal strife as star player Angel Reese calls for major changes in the team's front office and criticizes her teammates.

Reese's remarks, reported by Jack Maloney under the headline "Angel Reese calls out Sky's front office, demands big moves in free agency: 'We have to get great players'", have caused a stir within the organization. The Sky's 2025 season will conclude on September 11 at home against the New York Liberty, but the team's future seems uncertain.

Reese, who is facing a one-game suspension due to receiving her eighth technical foul of the season, has expressed a desire for the Sky to acquire "great players" in free agency. She believes the team needs a younger player with experience to compete for a championship. However, her comments about specific teammates, including Courtney Vandersloot, Rachel Banham, Hailey Van Lith, and Kamilla Cardoso, have not been well-received.

Vandersloot, a franchise icon, has been sidelined with a torn ACL since June 7. Reese stated that the team cannot rely on her return due to her age. This comment, along with her criticism of her teammates, has reportedly left her teammates unhappy, according to Annie Costabile of Front Office Sports.

In an attempt to clarify her comments, Reese claimed that some of her words were taken out of context in the Chicago Tribune interview. She has also publicly apologized to her teammates for any harm her words may have caused.

The Sky have planned a team meeting to discuss the situation. Coach Tyler Marsh stated that the organization is aware of Reese's comments and will handle the matter "in-house." Reese, on the other hand, stated that her teammates have been supportive throughout the season, despite her critical comments.

Reese's future in Chicago may not be reparable, according to some sources. She has hinted at leaving the Sky when her contract is up in 2027 if she doesn't see the changes she wants. The Sky owe their lottery-bound first-round 2026 draft pick to the Minnesota Lynx, which could potentially be a fresh start for the team.

As the Sky's 2025 season draws to a close, the team is left to navigate the fallout from Reese's comments and determine their path forward. The future of the team hangs in the balance, with much uncertainty ahead.
