Skyrocketing Premier League Spending Nears £3 Billion Threshold
In the ongoing summer transfer window, the English football landscape is being reshaped by a series of potential blockbuster deals.
The potential transfer of Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart to Newcastle United is under discussion, but it's another potential move that has caught the attention of the football world. Alexander Isak, currently at Real Sociedad, is rumoured to be joining Liverpool, a deal that could shatter transfer records.
Bookmakers have suspended betting on Isak joining Liverpool in the coming days, fueling speculation about the imminent nature of the deal. If it goes through, it will be the second time this year that Liverpool has set a new benchmark for a transfer fee in the Premier League.
The total spending by the top 20 English clubs could reach close to £3bn for the first transfer window in history, if Isak's transfer goes through. This spending surpasses the previous record of £2.5bn already spent this summer, a figure that was itself a record set just a few weeks ago.
Liverpool have been asked to pay £40m for Marc Guehi by Crystal Palace, but it's Isak's transfer that is expected to eclipse this fee. The transfer fee for Isak is expected to be around £150m, making it a new record purchase for a Premier League club, surpassing Liverpool's £142m sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in 2018.
Arsenal have agreed a £52m deal for Pedro Hincapie of Bayer Leverkusen, and Newcastle might be interested in Brentford's Yoane Wissa, who costs around £50m. If these deals and Isak's transfer are completed, they could contribute to a domino effect that takes total spending by the top 20 English clubs close to £3bn for the first transfer window in history.
Possible transfers in the coming days include Xavi Simons to Tottenham Hotspur for about €60 million, Christian Norgaard moving from Brentford to Arsenal for approximately £15 million, and Eberechi Eze transferring from Crystal Palace to Arsenal for a club-record fee up to £67.5 million including add-ons.
Fulham are pursuing Shakhtar Donetsk's Kevin, who is valued at £40m, and Alejandro Garnacho is set to join Chelsea from Manchester United. Xavi Simons is poised to join Tottenham Hotspur from RB Leipzig.
The protracted deal between Newcastle United and Liverpool is of interest to transfer data crunchers and historians of English football's top flight. If Alexander Isak moves from Newcastle United to Liverpool, his transfer will be the biggest deal - whether purchase or sale - concluded by an English club, a milestone in the ever-evolving world of Premier League football.
