Social media platform TikTok, owned by Bytedance, temporarily halts its live streaming feature in Indonesia amidst public demonstrations.

In a move aimed at maintaining a safe and civil space on its platform, TikTok has voluntarily decided to suspend its live feature in Indonesia for a few days. The suspension comes in response to the escalating violence during the nationwide protests that began on August 25, 2025.

The protests, primarily fuelled by low wages, tax increases, and controversial high allowances for parliament members, have led to violent clashes, resulting in the tragic deaths of eight protesters and causing damage to police vehicles. Some parliament buildings have even been set on fire after confrontations with the police.

TikTok's spokesperson made a statement, confirming the suspension and reiterating the company's commitment to removing content that violates its community guidelines. The suspension is temporary and only affects the live feature of TikTok in Indonesia. Other features of the app will continue to function as usual.

With over 100 million accounts based in Indonesia, TikTok is a significant part of the digital landscape in the country. The company's decision to suspend the live feature is intended to help keep the platform a safe and civil space during these challenging times.

The statement was made by TikTok on Saturday, and the suspension is expected to last for the next few days. As the situation in Indonesia continues to evolve, it is likely that TikTok will monitor the situation closely and adjust its measures as necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of its users.
