Social media platforms operating in Nepal have been restored following violent protests that led to disruptions.

In a significant move, the government of Nepal has lifted its social media ban, which was imposed last Friday, following an emergency cabinet meeting. The decision was made in response to widespread fury and violent protests that erupted across the country, particularly among the younger generation who heavily rely on social media for communication.

The social media ban, which affected platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter, was implemented to control the spread of misinformation during a time of political unrest. However, it sparked outrage, with videos contrasting the struggles of ordinary Nepalis with the luxury lifestyles of politicians' children going viral on TikTok, which was not blocked.

The protests, demanding the government lift its restrictions and tackle corruption, resulted in the tragic loss of at least 19 lives. Reports suggest that 17 people died in the capital, Kathmandu, and two more in Sunsari district in eastern Nepal. Amnesty International reported that live ammunition was used against protesters.

The situation escalated further as police in Kathmandu used rubber bullets, tear gas, water cannon, and batons during the protests. The economic struggles of the country also fueled the anger, with Nepal's gross domestic product (GDP) per capita standing at US$1,447, according to the World Bank. The country also has an unemployment rate of around 10 percent.

Despite the lifting of the social media ban, the government had previously blocked 26 unregistered platforms. However, major social media apps are now functioning in Nepal, providing relief to millions of users who rely on them for entertainment, news, and business. Popular platforms such as Instagram have a significant user base in Nepal.

The interior minister, Prithvi Subba Gurung, stated that the cabinet collectively made the decision to lift the ban following the violent protests. He emphasised that the government values the freedom of speech and expression and will take necessary steps to ensure peace and stability in the country.

As the situation in Nepal continues to evolve, it is clear that the lifted social media ban will have a significant impact on the way information is shared and received in the country. The government's response to the protests and their commitment to addressing corruption and economic issues will be closely watched by the Nepalese people and the international community.
