Societal Tranquility Discourse by Fr. Emmanuel Katongole: Insights on Peace Building in Contemporary Society

In the heart of Wilbraham, Massachusetts, Molly Landis '27, a senior at the College, is making waves beyond her English and Economics major. Her journey took an unexpected turn when she became involved with the Bethany Land Institute, a unique educational establishment that has become a cornerstone in her life.

Initially hesitant about attending the Institute, Molly found herself graduating with skills that would transform not just her academic career, but her family's livelihood as well. The Institute, with its principles rooted in the 3 Es: environment, education, and economics, encouraged Molly to grow and sell crops on her own plot of land. This practical learning experience proved to be a game-changer, enabling her to contribute significantly to her family's sustenance.

The Bethany Land Institute, initially an initiative to combat deforestation in Africa, has evolved into a comprehensive learning centre that provides students with education in economics and agriculture. It also serves as a Centre for Reconciliation, connecting students spiritually to God and the land.

On February 15, Father Emmanuel Katongole, an author and a professor at the University of Notre Dame, shed light on the Institute during his talk at the College. Katongole, a prolific writer with nine books under his belt, focused on peace in society today and its connection to the Catholic Social Mission. He left students with a powerful message, "Wherever you are, start there, start small, start well, start now."

Meanwhile, the College's Office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) underwent a significant change, aligning with a pillar of the Aspire goals: inclusive excellence. The office has since been rebranded as the Office of Justice, Equity, Belonging, and Identity (JEBI).

Molly Landis '27, a News Staff Writer at the College, is also involved in Radio at WCHC 88.1FM, Multicultural Peer Educator, and Kimball Captain. Her photograph, courtesy of Charlotte Fallon '26 and Mara Galvin '24, captures her vibrant spirit and dedication to making a difference.

In her free time, Molly enjoys delving into her favourite movies, Rosemary's Baby and Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Her journey at the College and her involvement with the Bethany Land Institute serve as a testament to her resilience, adaptability, and commitment to learning and growth.
