Society Talk: Fr. Emmanuel Katongole Discusses Attaining Peace in Current Societal Scenarios
In a captivating lecture held at Bethany College on February 15, Father Emmanuel Katongole, a renowned theologian and peace studies professor at the University of Notre Dame, shared insights about his work at the Bethany Land Institute in Uganda.
Father Katongole, who holds a joint appointment at the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, emphasised the three Es - "environment, education, and economics" as principles of the Institute. These principles aim to foster sustainable development and promote peace and reconciliation in Africa.
The Bethany Land Institute, initially an initiative to combat deforestation in Africa, has evolved into a Centre for Reconciliation. It provides students with education in economics and agriculture, empowering them to grow crops and manage their own plots of land. This not only helps them to support their families economically but also encourages a sense of responsibility and community.
One compelling story Father Katongole shared was about a student who initially resisted attending the Institute. However, after joining, the student not only benefited greatly but also became a teacher and role model for others.
Meanwhile, within the Bethany College community, Molly Brewer Landis '27, a senior from Wilbraham, MA, continues to make her mark. Involved in Radio at WCHC 88.1FM, Multicultural Peer Educator, Kimball Captain, and Staff Writer for the College's news, Molly is also majoring in English and Economics.
Interestingly, Molly's favourite movies are Rosemary's Baby and Killer Klowns from Outer Space, showcasing her diverse interests beyond academia.
Recently, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) at Bethany College underwent a name change to align with a pillar of the Aspire goals: inclusive excellence. It is now known as the Office of Justice, Equity, Belonging, and Identity (JEBI).
Katongole's work, with its focus on peace and reconciliation, resonates deeply with Bethany's commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable community. His lecture served as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of education and the importance of sustainable development in promoting peace and reconciliation.
