Solo album announcement from Brandi Carlile titled 'Returning to Myself', released along with video for the title track.
Brandi Carlile has announced her highly anticipated new solo album, titled "Returning to Myself." Set to release on October 24, this album will be a joint release from Interscope Records and the revived Americana imprint, Lost Highway, now part of Interscope.
In a statement, Carlile revealed that the title track of her album is a reflection of her struggle with self-reflection and her preference for co-dependency. She values togetherness and believes it has given her everything she loves about life.
The album is a musical homage to Emmylou Harris's album 'Wrecking Ball', which Carlile sees as a defining moment for Harris due to its sound and the stage it emerged into. The first single from the album, also titled "Returning to Myself," was released concurrently with the album announcement.
Other songs on the album include "A Woman Oversees," "Anniversary," "Church & State," "No One Knows Us," and "A Long Goodbye." Notably, "You Without Me," previously released on a collaborative album with Elton John, is also included on the album in a new recording.
Carlile worked with her co-producers, Andrew Watt, Aaron Dessner, and Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver fame), separately and collectively. Justin Vernon added vocals on the track "A War With Time" and contributed instrumental work throughout the project. Instrumental support for the album comes from her longtime collaborators the Hanseroth Twins, SistaStrings, drummers Matt Chamberlain and Chad Smith, and keyboardist Josh Klinghoffer.
The music video for the single was directed by Floria Sigismondi. "Returning to Myself" is Carlile's first release on her own since 2021's "In These Silent Days."
The album contains 10 songs, including "Joni," a tribute to Joni Mitchell. Carlile, however, does not want to return to herself and finds the idea of untethering heroic. The album "Returning to Myself" is a testament to Carlile's unique musical journey and her commitment to creating meaningful and impactful music.
