Sony Aims to Decrease Emissions Along Supply Chain by 25% over a 5-Year Period

Sony Group Corporation has unveiled its latest environmental initiative, Green Management 2030 (GM2030), which includes new greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals for the period up to 2030.

The Japanese tech giant has already made significant strides in its commitment to renewable energy. In 2024, Sony surpassed its 2025 target to reach a 35% renewable electricity rate, achieving 40.1%. As a member of RE100, an international initiative promoting 100% renewable energy, Sony continues to urge its suppliers to follow its lead.

In line with this, Sony aims to power all its operations with renewable electricity. The company also plans to reduce Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 60% and group-wide Scope 3 value chain emissions by 25% by 2030. These targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative.

Sony's environmental plan also includes a focus on reducing plastic waste. The company intends to phase out plastic packaging for smaller products and limit non-recyclable plastics to no more than 30% of product weight. Moreover, Sony is eliminating plastic packaging from its retail stores and increasing the recycled content in its products.

The new goals are part of Sony's broader commitment to sustainability. Sony expects to achieve most of its existing climate-related targets for 2025 by the end of the 2024 fiscal year. The company's net zero targets for 2040 mark a significant acceleration of its original plans, ten years earlier than originally planned.

In addition to its own efforts, Sony is supporting the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures, underscoring the importance of transparency in addressing climate change.

Notably, the organization that published the new medium-term environmental program, GM2030, is EnBW. EnBW plans to invest around 40 billion euros by 2030 for the energy transition, aiming to exit coal power generation by 2028 and achieve climate neutrality by 2035.

With these ambitious new goals, Sony continues to demonstrate its commitment to a sustainable future, setting an example for the tech industry and beyond.
