Sony's Alleged PS6 Portable Console Specifications Indicate a Miracle of High-End, Innovative Processor Technology, Offered at a Price Point Barely Sufficient for Current-Day Equipment
The tech world is abuzz with excitement as rumours circulate about Sony's plans for a handheld PlayStation as part of its PS6 portfolio. According to various sources, including the tech YouTube channel Moore's Law is Dead, this new device is expected to feature a custom AMD chip, codenamed Canis.
The custom AMD chip, allegedly developed for the PS6 handheld, is manufactured by AMD on TSMC's N3 process node. Canis boasts a CPU consisting of four Zen 6c cores and two Zen 6 Low Power cores, with a CPU size of 135 square millimetres. It also utilises LPDDR5X-8533 memory with a 192-bit bus, resulting in a total of 48 GB of RAM.
The GPU of the handheld PlayStation is claimed to have 16 RDNA 5 compute units, and it's reported to have a clock speed of around 1.65 GHz in docked mode, offering up to 75% of a PS5's native rendering power. The handheld's GPU performance is impressive, especially considering that top-end handheld gaming PCs with similar specs to the claimed PS6 handheld are typically double the cost.
Sony is known for pricing its consoles competitively, and it's unlikely that the company would set the price for a PS6 handheld that low if it isn't expected to sell as many units as a normal console. However, given the next-gen architecture and expensive process node of the handheld PlayStation, $500 might not be enough to cover its production costs.
The handheld PlayStation is rumoured to be backwards compatible with PS5/PS4 games, making it a potential powerhouse for gamers. But for those on a tighter budget, there are other options available. The Steam Deck, for instance, is a popular choice, offering a more affordable handheld gaming experience. The Lenovo Legion Go S SteamOS ed. and the Ayaneo Flip DS are also contenders for the best overall and compact handheld gaming devices, respectively.
Meanwhile, the PlayStation Portal, retailing for $200, offers a more basic gaming experience with its Qualcomm chip, limited amount of RAM, and small battery. The MSI Claw 8 AI, on the other hand, is a Windows handheld that caters to a niche market, offering a more PC-like gaming experience.
As the release date for the handheld PlayStation approaches, more details about its specifications, pricing, and games library are expected to emerge. Until then, gamers can look forward to the exciting possibilities that this new device promises.
