Spanning Three Decades: Hainberg's Evolution from Military Grounds to Wildlife Sanctuary
Hainberg Nature Reserve, a biodiversity hotspot located between Fürth and Nuremberg, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The reserve, which was officially declared a nature reserve in 1995, boasts unique sand habitats and is the largest contiguous sand grassland in all of North Bavaria.
On June 30, 2025, starting at 3 pm, a celebration will take place near the entrance to the Unterasbach cemetery in Hainberg. The event will include information stands, games, and interactive activities, aiming to raise awareness of the ecological value of sand landscapes and appreciate their often-overlooked beauty.
A guided nature tour will be led by distinguished figures including District Administrator Bernd Obst, Environmental and Health Referent of the City of Nuremberg Britta Walthelm, Mayor of Stein Kurt Krömer, and Deputy Mayor of the City of Oberasbach Norbert Schikora. The tour will showcase the biodiversity and ecological value of the area, featuring rare species and plants native to the region.
In addition to the on-site celebration, a photo exhibition called "Sand Habitat" will be on display in the foyer of the Zirndorf District Office in Pinderpark 2 from July 2 to 3, 2025. This exhibition, curated by the Bavarian Society for the Protection of Birds and Nature (LBV), showcases the diverse and beautiful landscapes of Hainberg, from its dunes and heaths to its light oak and pine forests and the natural stream of the Asbach.
Sheep are used every summer to maintain the open areas in Hainberg, contributing to the preservation of its unique ecosystem. The history of Hainberg dates back to the Thirty Years' War, and the area has been used by the Royal Bavarian Army, the US Army, and the German Army.
