Spend Your Chilling Autumn Vacation at These Haunted Inns

The world of the paranormal intertwines with history at these unique bed and breakfasts and historical homes, where the past seems to linger.

The Foley House Inn, Savannah, Georgia

Steeped in a chilling tale, the Foley House Inn, Savannah's first bed and breakfast, dates back to 1896. The inn's website reveals a shocking discovery during property renovations - human skeletal remains were found behind a wall, and the identity of these remains remains a mystery. Guests have reported unexplained phenomena such as gusts of wind, strange sounds, and a well-dressed man walking the perimeter of the house at night, adding to the inn's haunting reputation.

The Borden House, Fall River, Massachusetts

Now known as the Lizzy Borden Bed and Breakfast, the Borden House in Fall River is a chilling testament to a grisly past. The room where Lizzie Borden's stepmother, Abby Borden, was found dead is one of the most popular rooms to stay in. In 2004, property owner Lee-Ann Wilber experienced a supernatural event where the lights flickered and burnt out simultaneously. Some guests claim to have encountered the spirit of Abby Borden, adding to the inn's eerie allure.

Thornewood Castle, Washington State

Thornewood Castle, a Tudor Gothic mansion built in 1908, was handpicked by Stephen King for the setting of his miniseries, Rose Red. The castle was once the home of Charles 'Chester' Thorne, a wealthy bank president and community leader. Chester Thorne is said to interact with guests, especially those staying in his old room, and is known to loosen light bulbs. His wife, Anna Thorne, is said to haunt the castle, often spotted gazing wistfully upon her gardens from her bridal suite.

The Artist House, Key West, Florida

Built between 1890 and 1898, the Artist House is a centrepiece of the Key West historical tour. The house was once the residence of painter and author Robert Eugene Otto and his wife, Anne. Reports of a beautiful apparition on the stairwell, believed to be the spirit of Anne, have been made. Robert the Doll, an antique doll that belonged to the Ottos, is the catalyst for dozens of modern "haunted doll" tropes in the media. The doll is now housed at the Fort East Martello Museum in Key West.

The Artist House, with its ghostly encounters and historical charm, is the second most photographed historical home in Key West, surpassed only by the Ernest Hemingway House.

These haunted inns and homes offer a unique blend of history and the supernatural, making for an unforgettable stay for those seeking a chilling adventure.
