Star soccer player Son Heung-min spearheads Major League Soccer's breaking of the transfer spending record
In a groundbreaking year for the North American league, Major League Soccer (MLS) shattered transfer spending records, reshaping the landscape of the sport.
The total transfer spending in 2025 was approximately $336 million, a 75 percent year-on-year increase and nearly double the previous MLS record of $188 million set in 2024. From January 1 to February 4 alone, the US ranked sixth worldwide in transfer expenditure at $145 million.
The new "cash-for-player" trade rule, introduced in January, has been instrumental in this surge. The rule accounted for more than $40 million across 11 players in its first season. Notable trades under the new system included moves for Evander to FC Cincinnati, Djordje Mihailovic to Toronto FC, Jack McGlynn to Houston Dynamo, Daniel Gazdag to Columbus Crew, Luciano Acosta to FC Dallas, and Dejan Joveljic to Sporting Kansas City.
Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) made the highest transfer in MLS history by signing Son Heung-min from Tottenham Hotspur for a reported fee exceeding $26.5 million. This marked the third time LAFC broke the league's individual transfer fee record in 2025.
Several clubs also set new internal transfer records in 2025, with Austin FC doing so twice. Atlanta United acquired Emmanuel Latte Lath for $22 million, while FC Cincinnati's move for Kevin Denkey was for $16.3 million.
The increased spending was not limited to incoming transfers. Outgoing fees in MLS increased by 126 percent versus the same period in 2024, with seven players departing MLS for fees of at least $10 million in 2025. Nine clubs set new records for outgoing transfers in the year.
The influx of international talent was also evident, with 169 international arrivals in MLS in 2025, spanning 50 countries and averaging 25.2 years of age. Top-flight leagues most targeted by MLS sides included Brazil (11 signings), Argentina (10), England (8), and Portugal (8).
Nearly half of MLS teams have completed a club-record signing in the past two years, reflecting the league's growing ambition and financial clout. This spending spree has undoubtedly set a new standard for MLS and signalled a bold new era for the league.
