Statement by 30 Donors on the Condition Surrounding El Fasher, Sudan

In the troubled region of Darfur, Sudan, a humanitarian crisis is unfolding, with dire consequences for the civilians caught in the conflict. The city of El Fasher, in North Darfur, is currently under siege by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), cutting off all trade routes and supply lines.

The situation has led to communal kitchens in the region shutting down due to food shortages, and over 60 people reportedly dying from malnutrition in the past week. Famine has been confirmed in the internally displaced persons (IDP) camps close to El Fasher in August 2024, and it is expected to spread further during the current lean season.

The International Criminal Court's Office of the Prosecutor stated in July 2025 that there are reasonable grounds to believe that war crimes and crimes against humanity have been, and continue to be, committed in Darfur. The statement calls on all parties to the conflict to guarantee immediate, unconditional, safe, and unhindered humanitarian access to populations in need, protect and prevent violations against civilians, and allow UN-led convoys and sustained UN presence across Sudan's territory.

Several nations have expressed their concern and are involved in the situation. Elsebeth Søndergaard Krone is the State Secretary for Development at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, while Diana Janse is the State Secretary for International Development Cooperation of Sweden. Åsmund Aukrust is the Minister of International Development of Norway, and Randeep Sarai is the Secretary of State (International Development) of Canada.

From Europe, countries such as Austria, Belgium, Croatia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Czechia, the Republic of Finland, French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Federal Foreign Office of Germany, the Hellenic Republic, Hungary, Italy, Ireland, Japan, Latvia, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia are also engaged. Jose Manuel Albares Bueno is the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Spain, and Gabija Grigaitė-Daugirdė is the Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Lithuania.

The civilians of North Darfur, especially women and girls, have been exposed to horrific violations, including alarming rates of conflict-related sexual violence. Attacks on civilian infrastructure, including markets and hospitals, have left the population with no access to healthcare.

Humanitarian organizations have been unable to deliver lifesaving aid to hundreds of thousands of civilians trapped in and around El Fasher for over a year. The price of food staples is surging, making it difficult for families to afford basic items. Hadja Lahbib is the organizer for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management, while Dominik Stillhart is the Head of Swiss Humanitarian Aid and Deputy Director General of Swiss Development Cooperation.

As the crisis deepens, the international community continues to call for a ceasefire in El Fasher, North Darfur, Sudan. However, besides the European Union, there are no specific states mentioned in the search results that have called for a ceasefire in the region. The situation in Darfur remains a pressing concern for the global community, and efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis and bring peace to the region are ongoing.
