Stray Canines in Delhi Facing Significant Alterations due to Supreme Court's Recent Decree
A significant campaign to manage the population of over 8,00,000 stray dogs in Delhi has been initiated. This extensive effort, one of the largest in the country, is a collaborative project involving NGOs, private vets, volunteers, and the government.
The campaign follows the Animal Birth Control (ABC) model, which has been praised for its effectiveness and humane approach, particularly in the Lucknow model. This approach emphasizes balanced care for both public safety and animal welfare.
Twenty-four government veterinary hospitals will serve as sterilization and vaccination centres for the campaign. The Supreme Court's new directions for stray dogs include sterilisation, deworming, and vaccination before release. This is aimed at reducing rabies cases and improving public safety.
In addition to the physical aspect of the campaign, education programs are being planned to raise awareness among citizens and animal lovers about responsible pet ownership and stray dog care.
The campaign also requires municipalities in Delhi to set up helplines for complaints and tracking regarding stray dogs. Proper feeding zones are to be created, and the feeding of stray dogs on public roads has been banned by the Supreme Court.
Aggressive dogs will be identified with red tags, and QR code collars may be used for tracking vaccination details. Only dogs with rabies or those showing aggressive behaviour will be kept in shelters. The campaign aims to improve the treatment of stray dogs, not just control their numbers.
The Supreme Court has provided greater reprieve to stray dogs in Delhi, but it is crucial to remember that public safety remains a priority. This national effort marks the beginning of a uniform, humane, and scientific policy for stray dog management across India.
The campaign is a significant step towards creating a more compassionate and safe environment for both humans and animals in Delhi.
