Strict, compulsory responsible gambling regulations proposed by New Jersey's gambling regulatory body for enhanced player protection.
The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) has announced plans to introduce new measures aimed at enhancing responsible gaming practices in the online gambling industry. These measures, which are expected to be implemented by online gambling operators in New Jersey, are intended to protect vulnerable players from potential harm.
Every online gambling operator must have a responsible gaming lead who will keep track of potentially vulnerable players and ensure that they receive proper treatment. The responsible gaming lead will also be responsible for implementing the new measures.
The DGE has outlined a dozen ways in which a customer's behavior could trigger a red flag. One such red flag is a significant increase in logged-in time for users by 50% in a week compared to the previous two weeks. Finishing a session twice in the same week with a balance lower than $1 could also be a red flag.
Customers deemed at risk will receive an email with information about support options and responsible gambling tools. The second step for customers at risk is account blocking until they watch a video tutorial on the topic. A third instance may result in the responsible gaming lead contacting the user by video or phone call.
Visiting the self-exclusion page three times in a 30-day period without completing the process can also trigger a red flag. A customer depositing more than $10,000 in 24 hours or more than $100,000 in 90 days could be flagged. Significant increases in wager sizes could also be a red flag.
The specific details of these measures have not been disclosed at this time. However, it is known that the proposals include strict requirements for online platforms to take action when a player's behavior triggers certain thresholds.
The public can provide feedback on the DGE's proposals until November 14. If no changes are necessary, the proposals will become mandatory. The last day for public participation is September 29, 2025.
These new measures are part of the DGE's commitment to ensuring a safe and responsible online gambling environment in New Jersey. The new measures aim to promote responsible gaming practices and protect vulnerable players from potential harm.
