Naturland Faces Crisis: Allegations of Contract Extension Irregularities and Financial Mismanagement

In a surprising turn of events, the organic farming association Naturland has called for an extraordinary crisis meeting on Friday, September 5. The gathering comes amidst a wave of controversy surrounding the association, with bio farmers expressing concerns about a potential leadership crisis.

At the heart of the matter is the controversial contract extension of the former Naturland managing director, Steffen Reeses, which is set to commence from February 2025. The extension, which has been met with much skepticism, is seen by the board as an "unauthorized benefit."

The contract extension, according to the board, is problematic for several reasons. Firstly, it does not include an age limit, a departure from previous agreements. Secondly, it was agreed upon without the knowledge or approval of the current board.

This development has sparked outrage among bio farmers who are calling for transparency and accountability. The board believes that Naturland is at a turning point, grappling with uncertainty, contradictory representations, and deep disagreements.

The disputes within Naturland can be traced back to the new board election in May. Internal conflicts around the restructuring of the presidium and management, including a leadership change and generational renewal, have led to organizational realignments.

The former board members are said to have increased Reeses' salary by around 16% in February 2025. Additionally, a generous severance package of around 675,000 euros gross was agreed for Reeses upon his departure.

Members of Naturland are critical of the former presidium member Felix Prinz zu Loewenstein's suggestion to forgo legal clarification. There are serious allegations and complaints against the board, with some farmers accusing Loewenstein of irregularities and issues with the management during his tenure.

In a related development, Bio Austria has threatened Naturland with a lawsuit. Naturland itself has chosen not to comment on the matter, while the new presidium has announced comprehensive clarification and transparency regarding the contract extension and further proceedings.

However, there is a suspicion of criminal disloyalty regarding the contract extension of Steffen Reeses. The non-profit status of Naturland is reportedly seriously endangered due to these developments.

In the midst of this crisis, Naturland President Heigl has declined to comment on the matter, stating that he is responsible for every member. The crisis meeting is expected to provide much-needed clarity and direction for the organic farming association.
