Strong earthquake of magnitude 4.8 strikes Sindirgi, Balikesir, causing noticeable shaking in Izmir, Bursa, and Istanbul.

In the northwestern province of Balikesir, Turkey, seismic activity continues to pose a challenge following a deadly 6.1-magnitude earthquake that struck on August 10, 2025. The earthquake, which caused significant damage and loss of life, was followed by a series of aftershocks, including a 4.2-magnitude and a 4.3-magnitude quake, both with epicenters at a depth of 7 kilometers and 7.01 kilometers, respectively.

The initial 6.1-magnitude earthquake was felt in neighboring provinces, including Izmir, Bursa, and Istanbul. The event brought back memories of the devastating earthquake that hit the southwest of Turkey in February 2023, which claimed at least 53,000 lives and severely damaged Antakya, home to the ancient city of Antioch.

In response to the 4.8-magnitude earthquake that occurred in Sindirgi, Balikesir on August 10, 2025, at 9:58 p.m. local time, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced the initiation of field surveys. All teams from AFAD and relevant institutions have since begun these surveys in relation to the earthquake. According to AFAD, there were no negative incidents reported in connection to the earthquake that occurred in Sindirgi.

Google's earthquake alert system reached Android users 30 seconds before the earthquake in Turkey, providing a crucial heads-up to many residents. The earthquake had an epicenter in Sindirgi and occurred at a depth of 7 kilometers.

As for the authorities' next planned measures following the magnitude 6.1 earthquake in Balikesir province in August 2025, the available sources do not provide explicit details. However, immediate responses included rescue operations for the injured and assessing damage after the quake on August 10, 2025.

It's important to note that Turkey is prone to devastating earthquakes due to its location atop several geological fault lines. In early July, a 5.8-magnitude tremor occurred in the same region of Turkey, causing one death and injuring 69 people.

As the situation continues to develop, updates will be shared to keep the public informed. For now, no negative developments have been reported in relation to the earthquake.
