Strong Wheat Harvest of 2025: Understanding the Most Powerful Wheat Varieties for Farmers
In the agricultural landscape of Germany, Dr. Matthias Benke and Eric PreuΓ from the Lower Saxony Chamber of Agriculture have compiled the nationwide breeding areas for the variety guide, a valuable resource for the Working Group of the Recognition Bodies for Agricultural Seed and Planting Material.
This guide offers a comprehensive overview of the varieties that breeders anticipate will have good market potential and which, particularly older ones, may be gradually replaced by newer, more promising alternatives.
The breeding areas do not specify the exact quantities of each variety that were increased in 2025. However, the market significance of a variety can be inferred from the scale of its increase.
This year, the north and west regions of Germany are expected to see significantly higher wheat increases, with some regions experiencing double-digit percentage growth. For instance, there is a 30% increase in wheat cultivation in Lower Saxony and a 17% increase in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The breeding areas also provide guidance on which varieties will have an abundance of seed available for the 2025 autumn sowing and where it may become scarce. Comparing the data with the previous year is particularly insightful, as it reveals which varieties are gaining popularity and which are on the decline.
However, the specific varieties and their increased cultivation areas for 2026 are not yet available in the current data.
In 2025, there was a total of 91,883 ha of winter cereal increases in the field, representing a 6% increase compared to the previous year's harvest. Currently, there are 45,917 ha of winter wheat in the field for seed production nationwide, which is 3,401 ha more than last year.
