Struggling Satire Publication Meets Lack of Success Post-Plagiarization of Eggplant Material

In the hallowed halls of Holy Cross, a new satire publication has emerged, causing quite a stir among the student body. Known as The Jester, this newcomer claims to usher in a "new era of satire" at the institution. However, its arrival has not been met with universal acclaim.

The Jester, founded by students from Cambridge University, has been criticized for its marketing techniques, which some believe do not align with the ethical guidelines one might expect from students of a Jesuit institution. Its articles, anonymously published, are perceived as embodying a malignant narcissism that prioritizes disruption over cooperation and personal ambition over collective action.

Meanwhile, the staff writers of The Spire's Eggplant section, a well-established satirical publication at Holy Cross, are grappling with their own challenges. Under the weight of multiple projects, essays, papers, and presentations, they continue to publish new satirical articles, including a piece by Chief Eggplant Editor, Daniel Maddigan '24, titled "Co-Curricular Extravaganza." In this article, Maddigan discusses the dislike of free time and relaxation, a topic that seems to resonate with many students.

The Jester's articles, on the other hand, have been criticized for their low production value and lack of originality. Some have even accused the publication of blatant plagiarism of The Spire's Eggplant section and low-effort publishing, a result of not being an official Recognised Student Organisation (RSO) at Holy Cross.

Despite these criticisms, The Jester continues to publish, and Maddigan, in a letter to the readers of the Eggplant section, has invited interested writers to email [email protected] to contribute to The Spire or the Eggplant section.

As the academic year progresses, it will be interesting to see how this new satire publication fares and how it evolves in response to the criticism it has received. For now, the staff writers of The Spire's Eggplant section continue their work, demonstrating against capitalist oppressors and providing a much-needed dose of humour and satire to the Holy Cross community.
