In the heart of Germany, the city of Bottrop is making waves in the realm of sustainable urban development. Mayor Bernd Tischler recently presented the city's circular economy project at the Cradle to Cradle Congress held at the Technical University of Berlin.

The project, named Bottrop.gemeinsam.zirkulär, is a significant step towards sustainable, circular urban development. This initiative, which runs from April 2025 to March 2028, involves collaboration between the city of Bottrop, Hochschule Ruhr West, and other partners. The aim is to advance Bottrop as a Circular City.

Mayor Tischler shared practical experiences from the project during his presentation, highlighting the success of networks and knowledge transfer tools in the InnovationCity climate protection project. He emphasized the importance of incorporating Cradle to Cradle principles in municipal buildings and renovation projects in Bottrop.

The "Cradle to Cradle" concept is a sustainable product lifecycle that emphasizes the reusability of components at the end of a product's useful life. Tischler believes that with additional political support and funding opportunities, acceptance among the public for engaging with private sector initiatives grows.

Resource-efficient business practices are recognized as necessary by the citizens of Bottrop, according to Mayor Tischler. Financial incentives are being provided to support active engagement in the circular economy project in Bottrop.

The project was presented as an example of collaboration across various levels of administration, science, business, and civil society. Tischler noted the willingness of stakeholders to collaborate in the project.

During a panel discussion, Tischler shared his views on the long-term establishment of real-world labs in urban development. He participated in the discussion with Lisa Niederhaus of the 2027 Landesgartenschau Neustadt an der Weinstraße and Dr. Grit Bürgow of the TU Berlin.

Tischler concluded at the Berlin congress that the administration's role is to establish real-world labs and communicate successes in urban development. He believes that positive communication and showcasing successful projects can alleviate fears of change.

The city of Bottrop is gaining regional attention for its efforts in climate and environmental protection. The citizens of Bottrop are ready to take action towards sustainability, according to Mayor Bernd Tischler. The circular economy project in Bottrop continues to be presented as a model for sustainable urban development.
