In the city of Augsburg, Germany, a targeted inspection was conducted on the gastronomic mile on August 21. The operation, which took place from 10 PM to midnight, was a collaborative effort between personnel from the municipal public order service and the trade department.
The inspection, in accordance with the Ordinance on Public Order, aimed to address complaints, strengthen the sense of security among citizens, and enforce applicable legal provisions. A total of eight personnel participated in the operation, four in plain clothes and four in uniform.
The inspection resulted in several violations being detected. Seven fines of 50 euros each were issued for littering, and four fines of 100 euros each were issued for public urination. Refusal to provide personal details can result in a fine of up to 1,000 euros, and in one case, the police were called in as individuals refused to comply.
The inspection was prompted by a brutal knife attack the previous evening, and Michael Althammer, the head of the municipal authority, stated that the aim is for the people of Bottrop to feel subjectively safe. He emphasized that such actions are important for ensuring public safety.
Michael Althammer also highlighted that the inspection was intended to send a clear signal for order and security. He explained that the municipal authority takes complaints seriously and acts accordingly, and that the aim is to prevent the impression of supposedly lawless areas.
In some situations, immediate coercion was necessary as individuals attempted to flee. The municipal authority conducts such inspections to maintain order and promote a safe and secure environment for its citizens.
