Suggestions for Health Precautions in Spring 2025
As the spring semester at our institution approaches, it's important for students to be aware of the common viruses that can impact their health. In particular, Norovirus and respiratory illnesses are on the rise, especially in Lorain County.
Norovirus, a highly contagious virus, is known for causing sudden onset of vomiting and diarrhea. Symptoms also include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, stomach pain, fever, headache, and body aches. Transmitted primarily via the fecal-oral route, Norovirus outbreaks occur throughout the year, but are most common from November to April.
Hand sanitizer alone does not work well against Norovirus. To prevent its spread, it's crucial to wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating, after using the toilet, and before preparing or handling food. It's also important to clean and sanitize surfaces regularly with a cleaner approved for Norovirus.
If you are sick, it's essential to stay home, do not prepare food for others, and clean and disinfect surfaces contaminated with fecal material or vomit. Student Health Services strongly recommends practicing good hand hygiene, observing respiratory etiquette, staying home when sick, maintaining a healthy diet, drinking plenty of water, and getting 7-8 hours of sleep each night to prevent the spread of Norovirus on campus.
In addition to Norovirus, respiratory illnesses such as influenza and COVID-19 are also on the rise. Student Health Services offers flu vaccines free of charge and with no need for an appointment. Updated COVID-19 vaccines are available at CVS and other nearby pharmacies. Rapid antigen self-tests for COVID-19 are available for students at Student Health during office hours and at Campus Safety after hours.
Student Health Services encourages the use of masks indoors and/or in crowded spaces for the first two weeks back on campus due to the high level of respiratory illnesses nationally. Walk-in hours at Student Health services are available Monday through Friday from 9 to 11 a.m., and the services are open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with extended hours till 7 p.m. on Thursdays.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Student Health Services at 440-774-8180 or via email at health@our website. Your health and safety are our top priority, and we're here to help you stay healthy during the upcoming semester.
