Superhero films' excessive violence criticized as "pornographic" by Stephen King
In the world of horror and thriller cinema, the highly anticipated film adaptation of Stephen King's 1979 novel, The Long Walk, is making waves. The screenwriter behind this chilling production is JT Mollner, who has crafted a screenplay that promises to deliver a faithful adaptation of King's dystopian vision.
King, the most adapted living author in cinematic history, has not been shy about expressing his opinions regarding the portrayal of violence in popular film franchises such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In a recent statement, he described the depiction of violence in these films as "pornographic."
When it comes to The Long Walk, however, King has taken a more hands-on approach. He insists that the film must not shy away from the brutal reality of the contest depicted in the novel. If violence is not shown, King argues, there is no point in making the movie.
Speaking about the new film, King emphasised the importance of depicting the young characters being brutally killed. He finds it wrong that in superhero movies, despite the depiction of destruction, there is no visible blood.
Francis Lawrence, the director of The Long Walk, has been a key creative contributor to the film, alongside Mollner's notable screenplay. The screenplay, praised for its significant impact, particularly highlights the dialog and character interactions between the leads Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson.
Set in a dystopian United States, The Long Walk follows 100 young men who enter an annual walking contest in which they must maintain a speed of at least three miles per hour, or they will be killed. The winner of The Long Walk is the last remaining walker.
With its gripping narrative, intense violence, and powerful performances, The Long Walk promises to be a haunting addition to the horror thriller genre. As the release date approaches, fans of Stephen King and horror cinema eagerly await the adaptation of this classic novel.
