Supporting Companion: Standing by Your Side for Your Community
In a concerning trend, one in ten LGBTQ+ workers experienced discrimination at their place of employment in the last year, according to recent data. This statistic highlights the ongoing struggle for equality and acceptance in the workplace.
Another alarming finding is that half of LGBTQ+ individuals choose to remain closeted to their current supervisor. The fear of potential discrimination and harassment keeps many from openly identifying as part of the LGBTQ+ community in the workplace.
The courage to walk into a job openly LGBTQ+ is still a rarity for many, with many employees feeling the need to "cover" their identities to avoid unwanted attention and potential discrimination. This secrecy and fear are all too common in many workplaces, creating an environment that is far from inclusive and supportive.
In an effort to combat these issues, the organisation Out & Equal created the "Ally Guide" for LGBTQ+ inclusion in the workplace. This guide was introduced in the first issue of Qzine, published in March 2023. Allies play a crucial role in creating safe spaces for LGBTQ+ employees, but it's important to note that it's not always as simple as establishing a diversity and inclusivity committee.
Allies can make a significant difference by educating themselves and others about LGBTQ+ issues, advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, and creating an environment where everyone feels valued and respected. By working together, we can strive towards a workplace where every individual, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, can feel safe, accepted, and able to thrive.
