Surveillance of U.S. Military by Chinese Agents?

A US citizen is currently standing trial in Germany, accused of espionage for China. The Federal Prosecutor's Office in Karlsruhe has charged the individual with offering sensitive information from the US military to a Chinese intelligence service.

The suspect is alleged to have worked on a US military base in Germany since at least 2020. According to reports, he has been exercising his activity on the base until his arrest earlier this year. The top prosecutor's office did not specify the nature of the sensitive information the man is accused of offering.

The man's apartment was searched during the arrest, and he has been in custody since then. The State Protection Senate of the Higher Regional Court of Koblenz must decide whether to allow the indictment and set a trial date.

In summer 2024, the man is said to have contacted Chinese state institutions and offered to transmit sensitive information to a Chinese intelligence service. The Federal Prosecutor's Office collaborated with the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution during the investigation.

The arrest is not an isolated incident. In recent months, several individuals have been arrested by the Federal Prosecutor's Office for spying for a Chinese intelligence service. In a separate case, a former employee of the AfD MEP Maximilian Krah was arrested in April 2024 for transmitting information from the EU Parliament and spying on Chinese opposition figures in Germany.

The US citizen was arrested by the Federal Criminal Police Office in Frankfurt am Main at the beginning of November. However, his name has not been publicly disclosed. The trial for the individual is ongoing.
