Susan Stamberg, groundbreaking figure and Matriarch of NPR, bids farewell to her career
Susan Stamberg, a trailblazer in the world of broadcasting, is putting down her microphone this week after more than five decades at National Public Radio (NPR). Her voice, described as sharp, saucy, silken, and bell-ringing, helped turn "What is NPR?" into "Have you heard NPR?"
Stamberg became the first woman ever to anchor a daily national evening news broadcast in the U.S., on All Things Considered in 1972. Her broadcasting style, which was serious, curious, relentless, and utterly delightful, played a significant role in giving personality to the fledgling network.
Stamberg's efforts have lifted up the NPR community for 50 years. Her work inspired a generation of journalists, including Nina Totenberg and Melissa Block, who later worked at NPR. A young reporter in Chicago was also inspired by her voice, along with Linda Wertheimer, Nina Totenberg, Cokie Roberts, Noah Adams, and Bob Edwards.
Stamberg's voice helped NPR become a household name. Her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is a testament to her influence. She has won shelves of major awards in broadcasting, and her retirement marks the end of an era in the world of journalism.
Maestro Jorge Mester, of the Louisville Orchestra, shared his thoughts on Stamberg's impact. He mentioned that only unemployed conductors' arms get tired, a humorous nod to Stamberg's tireless work ethic. Mester also noted that his right arm gets a little heavy, but his arms stay in good condition, much like Stamberg's career.
Stamberg's departure from NPR comes at a time when women have entered media at all ranks and responsibilities, including correspondents, anchors, news directors, CEOs. In part, this is due to Stamberg's efforts in breaking through broadcasting's dense male wall.
Stamberg's influence extends beyond NPR. Her work inspired countless individuals, and her legacy will continue to shape the world of journalism for years to come. As she steps away from the microphone, we reflect on the impact she has had on the industry and express our gratitude for her contributions.
