A 20-year-old man is under investigation for a series of burglaries at hardware stores in the Middle Franconia region, following a string of incidents over the past weekend.
The saga began on Friday, August 22, 2025, at a hardware store in Fürth's Fritz-Gastreich-Straße, where the man is suspected of stealing items without paying. Despite not being initially detained, the incident marked the start of a troubling pattern.
On Saturday, the man struck again at a hardware store in Erlangen's Neumühle. This time, he removed items from the display and fled the scene without being stopped.
The third incident occurred later in the day at the same store in Erlangen, where the man was provisionally arrested by Erlangen-Stadt police. According to reports, the man used pepper spray on a 75-year-old employee during the struggle that followed his theft.
In each incident, officers found suspected stolen goods in the man's vehicle, including items from earlier that morning and the previous day. The man was also accused of allowing an employee to advise him on an item, then leaving without purchasing it and stealing another item.
The public prosecutor's office has applied for the 20-year-old to be held in custody. The man is currently being examined in the local criminal court, though the specific court name was not provided.
The man's actions have left the community shaken, with many expressing concern for the safety of employees and customers at these establishments. As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information regarding these incidents to come forward.
