In a dramatic turn of events on Sunday afternoon, two lifeguards were rescued at Foz do Arelho beach in Caldas da Rainha, Leiria district. The incident unfolded when the lifeguards found themselves in trouble while trying to help a colleague in distress in the sea.

The Portuguese Maritime Authority raised the alarm, setting off a series of rescue operations. The National Maritime Authority (AMN) activated several teams, including the Peniche Lifeguard Station, Peniche Local Maritime Police Command, 'Seawatch' project, Caldas da Rainha Volunteer Firefighters, and 'Oeste Rescue' Lifeguard Association. The alert was relayed through the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Lisbon).

The lifeguards, who were swept away by the strong current, were eventually rescued and transported to the port of Peniche. One of the lifeguards was taken to a hospital unit for observation, while the other managed to return to the shore on his own. The authorities confirmed the incident at the scene.

Unfortunately, the incident left a colleague of the rescued lifeguards in distress. However, it is reported that the lifeguard who initially rescued the swimmer was able to make it back to the shore safely.

It is worth noting that no further information was provided about a separate incident involving four crew members rescued off the coast of Porto Santo.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that lifeguards face while performing their duties. The public is urged to heed warnings and follow safety guidelines when visiting beaches, especially during periods of strong currents.

The Peniche Local Maritime Police Command took charge of the incident, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of those involved. The community expresses its gratitude to the brave lifeguards and rescue teams for their quick action and dedication to public safety.
