Swimming at the majority of bathing spots in Riga is considered secure.

In the heart of Riga, residents and visitors alike are advised to be aware of temporary swimming restrictions at several bathing sites due to the presence of cyanobacteria and elevated levels of enterococcus.

Repeat tests will be carried out next week at the affected sites, including the Daugava opposite 320 Latgales iela, where cyanobacteria have been found. Meanwhile, swimming is temporarily prohibited at these sites to ensure public safety.

The municipality recommends using the official bathing sites in Daugavgrīva, Vakarbuļļi, Vecāķi, Rumbula, Babelītis, Ķīpsala, Lucavsala, Lucavsala Bay, and the recreation area at Ķīšezers instead. These recommended bathing sites are adequately equipped and are manned by lifeguards from the Riga Municipal Police for added safety.

The official bathing sites in Riga during the leisure season are daily supervised by local public health and safety authorities. While the exact names of these agencies are not specified, they typically involve municipal health inspectors and possibly emergency services. The Health Inspectorate also conducts regular inspections at the beginning of each month.

It is important to note that the Department of Housing and Environment monitors water quality at 24 popular recreational areas monthly during the bathing season. Signs have been posted at the affected sites to alert the public of the temporary swimming restrictions.

In addition to the Daugava, an elevated intestinal enterococcus indicator has been found near Birzes Street and the Bullūpe River. As a precaution, it is recommended to avoid swimming in these areas until further notice.

The municipality urges the public to prioritise their health and safety and follow the guidelines set in place to ensure a enjoyable and safe leisure season in Riga. Regular updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
