Talk on Iran at the Pforzheim Applied Sciences University

Dr. Katajun Amirpur, a renowned professor of Islamic studies at the University of Cologne, will speak at Pforzheim University's Studium Generale on May 16, 2023. The lecture titled "Iran - What's Next for the Uprising Against the Islamic State?" will take place at 7 PM in the Audimax of Pforzheim University, Tiefenbronner Straße 65.

Amirpur was awarded the prestigious Reuchlin Prize in 2022 for her arguments that invite understanding of different perspectives, without advocating for Iran, its theocracy, or any misuse of religion. Her research focuses on Iran and Iranian-influenced cultures and societies in Asia, as well as on Iranian diaspora communities worldwide.

The uprising against the Islamic state in Iran was sparked in September 2022, following the death of young Mahsa Amini in police custody. Amirpur will describe the transformations of the regime and why more and more people are turning away from the system and from Islam.

Behind the facade of strict divine rule, a brutal dictatorship of the Revolutionary Guards has established itself in Iran. The Revolutionary Guard is actively involved in suppressing the ongoing protests against the Islamic State's rule, using mass arrests, lethal force, and harsh repression including torture and denial of medical treatment to protestors since the uprising began. Over 1,500 peaceful protesters and bystanders have been killed, and at least 12,000 arrests have been carried out during these demonstrations across the country.

Despite the potential resistance from the Revolutionary Guards, Amirpur believes there is a chance for success in the uprising against the Islamic state. In her lecture, Professor Amirpur will explain why the Iranians, particularly the Iranian women, have begun to tear down the facade of Islamism.

Amirpur's latest book, "Iran Without Islam - The Uprising Against the Islamic State," was published in March. The lecture will also be streamed live for those unable to attend in person.

It is important to note that the lecture at Pforzheim University is not about defending Islam or the Islamic state. Instead, it is an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the ongoing uprising in Iran and its potential implications for the future of the country. The event may be archived on the website, but phone and contact information, as well as event dates, may no longer be current.
