Temple of Jagannath Introduces Dedicated Lactation Space for Nursing Mothers Among Worshippers
In a commendable move towards making public institutions more sensitive to the needs of women and children, the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) in Puri, Odisha, has established a dedicated breastfeeding room for mothers visiting the shrine with infants.
The breastfeeding room, located near the temple complex, has been created to provide comfort and convenience for nursing mothers. For many years, women had struggled to find a safe and dignified space to feed their children within the temple premises.
The initiative is part of a broader effort across the country to address an often-overlooked need in public and religious spaces. The breastfeeding room is equipped with all essential facilities, including comfortable seating and privacy arrangements. It can accommodate up to four mothers at a time.
Two female temple staff, or Jagannath Temple Police personnel, have been deployed to assist mothers and ensure the smooth functioning of the breastfeeding room. A medical team has also been stationed nearby to provide immediate assistance in case of emergencies.
The person who initiated the creation of the weekly children's rooms in the Shree Jagannath Temple is Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb. His efforts towards making the temple more family-friendly have been widely praised by devotees and social activists.
The establishment of the breastfeeding room is seen as a significant step towards making religious spaces more inclusive. The 12th-century Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri, which sees thousands of devotees daily, is now better equipped to cater to families with young children.
Meanwhile, in a separate issue, Rahul Gandhi, a political figure, has called the deaths of infants in a hospital due to rat bites "outright murder." The context of his statement was not provided in the paragraph.
This development at the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri is a progressive step in enhancing the temple's accessibility for families with young children. It serves as an example for other public and religious institutions to follow in making their spaces more welcoming and accommodating for mothers and infants.
