Carlos Alcaraz Claims U.S. Open Title and No. 1 Ranking from Jannik Sinner

In a thrilling showdown, Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner to win the 2025 U.S. Open final and claim his sixth Grand Slam title overall. The match, marked by intense rallies and strategic play, saw Alcaraz emerge victorious with a score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

The final marked the third consecutive Grand Slam tournament where Alcaraz and Sinner met to decide the champion. Since the start of the 2024 U.S. Open, Sinner had won 33 of 34 matches at the majors. Sunday was his fifth straight final at those events, with his only loss being to Alcaraz at Roland-Garros.

The contest began with Alcaraz showcasing his aggressive forehand, trying to exploit any openings. Despite Sinner's tactical switch, focusing on Alcaraz's backhand to limit forehand opportunities and force errors, the No. 1-seeded Sinner found himself trailing in the first set.

In the second set, Sinner turned the tables, winning the set to level the match. However, Alcaraz regained his form in the third and fourth sets, breaking Sinner's serve five times during the final. The first set and third set saw Alcaraz's winner-to-unforced error ratio as 11:2 and 11:5 respectively.

The match was delayed due to extra security measures as President Donald Trump was in attendance. The delay did not seem to affect Alcaraz, who maintained his focus and determination throughout the match.

During the Wimbledon final, Alcaraz was recorded telling his team that Sinner is better from the back of the court. This acknowledgement from Alcaraz underscored the high level of competition between the two players.

Sinner dealt with an abdominal muscle issue during his semifinal match, which may have contributed to his eventual loss. Despite this, Sinner's record over the last two seasons against players other than Alcaraz is a impressive 109-4.

This was Alcaraz's second trophy at Flushing Meadows and his sixth overall at a major. His victory allowed him to take away the No. 1 ranking from Sinner. These two players have combined to collect the past eight Slam trophies in a row, and 10 of 13.

In 2025, Alcaraz has won 7 tournament titles, which is more than his losses (61-6). The Spaniard has a lead of 10-5 in their head-to-head series, 6-4 in major trophies, and 2-1 in U.S. Open championships.

Sunday's showdown represented the first time in tennis history that the same two men played each other in three consecutive Slam finals within a single season. Neale Fraser's record of winning every set he played at the event remains intact, as Alcaraz conceded a set for the first time all tournament.

As Alcaraz lifts the U.S. Open trophy, tennis fans eagerly await the next chapter in this historic rivalry.
