Tennis player Świątek experiences setbacks but advances to the quarter-finals
US Open Tennis: Gauff and Świątek Advance, Osaka Looms
The US Open Tennis tournament is heating up, with some exciting matches taking place on Saturday. Second-seeded Polish Iga Świątek and eighth-seeded American Amanda Anisimova are both aiming to advance to the fourth round.
In her match, Świątek, the world's second-ranked player, managed to defeat Anna Kalinskaya 7-6 (7-2), 6-4. Despite making 23 unforced errors and winning only 37% of her first serves, Świątek showed resilience to secure her place in the round of 16.
Meanwhile, Coco Gauff had a more straightforward victory over Magdalena Frech, winning 6-3, 6-1. Gauff committed only 18 unforced errors and won the point on 10 of her 11 net approaches. She also did not commit a double fault on her first service game and did not lose her serve at the start of the match for the first time at this year's US Open.
Gauff's performance was a stark contrast to her previous appearances, with no tears or difficulties in sight. Thousands of fans cheered and applauded to support Gauff, who responded by shaking a ball vigorously before serving at 170 km/h, causing a return to go outside the court.
In the fourth round, Gauff will face Japanese player Naomi Osaka, who earned her place with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 win over Australian Daria Kasatkina. Osaka will be a formidable opponent for Gauff, as she is a three-time Grand Slam champion.
Other notable matches included Marta Kostyuk's comeback victory over Frenchwoman Diane Parry (3-6, 6-4, 6-2), and Karolina Muchova's three-set win over her compatriot Linda Noskova (6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-2).
In a surprising turn of events, Świątek faced Anisimova in the fourth round of the 2025 US Open, with Anisimova eventually advancing to the semifinals. Ekaterina Alexandrova (No.13) will face Świątek in the round of 16, after defeating Laura Siegemund 6-0, 6-1.
The US Open continues to deliver exciting tennis action, with Gauff and Osaka's highly anticipated match set for Monday. Fans are eagerly waiting to see who will advance to the quarterfinals and potentially challenge for the title.
