Tennis star, Alexander Zverev, eliminated in the third round of the US Open by Félix Auger-Aliassime
Alexander Zverev's US Open campaign came to an end in the quarterfinals, as he was defeated by Felix Auger-Aliassime in a four-set match. The German tennis star, ranked third in the world, struggled to find his form throughout the tournament and admitted that he did not play well.
Despite his overall disappointing performance, Zverev managed to achieve a significant milestone in his career by defeating a top 5 player in a Grand Slam tournament for the first time against Auger-Aliassime. However, this victory was not indicative of a strong performance, as Zverev commented that he did not play a good match.
The match, which lasted 3 hours and 48 minutes, saw Zverev make several poor decisions and express visible nervousness on the court. He also commented that he had no feel for the ball, a sentiment he shared last year when he was eliminated in the same round.
In contrast, Auger-Aliassime, ranked 25th in the ATP, showed remarkable composure and skill during crucial moments of the match. The Canadian hit 50 winners and won the match with scores of 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4, 6-4.
After the match, Zverev expressed his dissatisfaction with his performance, stating, "I didn't play a good match, and not a good tournament overall." He also revealed that he will face Russian Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals, a player he has only beaten once in eight matches.
Meanwhile, Auger-Aliassime will face either Alex de Minaur or an unnamed opponent in the semifinals. The identity of his next opponent is yet to be determined, as the quarterfinals are ongoing.
Despite his elimination, Zverev remained optimistic, stating, "I'm not done yet." He will look to bounce back in his upcoming matches and continue his pursuit of Grand Slam glory.
