Alexander Zverev Exits US Open Early, Auger-Aliassime Advances

In a surprising turn of events at the 2023 US Open, German tennis star Alexander Zverev was knocked out in the third round by Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime. This marks the first time these two players have clashed in a Grand Slam tournament.

The match, which lasted an gruelling 3 hours and 48 minutes, saw Zverev claim the first set. However, Auger-Aliassime fought back, winning the next three sets (4-6, 7-6 (9/7), 6-4, 6-4). Zverev even had a set point in the second set but was unable to capitalise.

Following his impressive victory, Auger-Aliassime expressed his satisfaction with his performance at the US Open. He acknowledged that the tournament is not yet over and the job is not done. The young Canadian, who has been participating in the tournament since 2018, also shared that he has been working hard to improve his performance.

Auger-Aliassime, who is yet to turn 23, was thrilled about beating a top-five player at a Grand Slam for the first time. However, he did not mention any specific player he beat. It's worth noting that Zverev, who is the 2020 US Open runner-up, has suffered his earliest Grand Slam exit in six years at Wimbledon last month.

In his statement, Auger-Aliassime did not provide any new information about his previous performances or personal life. He only focused on the match and the tournament ahead. Auger-Aliassime advances to a fourth-round meeting with Russian 15th seed Andrey Rublev on Monday.

As for Zverev, this is the first time he has failed to reach the second week at the US Open since 2018. His best run at a major was reaching the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows four years ago. His opponent in the 2023 US Open quarterfinal was Alex de Minaur.

Despite the early exit, Zverev can take solace in the fact that he has had a successful year, reaching the final of the ATP Finals in Turin last year. He will undoubtedly be looking to bounce back in the upcoming tournaments.
