In the ongoing US Open tennis tournament, there were several noteworthy developments on Saturday.

Eighth seed Alex de Minaur was leading Daniel Altmaier 6-7 (7/9), 6-3, 6-4, 2-0 when the German had to retire due to an unspecified injury, allowing de Minaur to progress to the next round.

Meanwhile, in the women's draw, Coco Gauff, the American sensation, is heading into a showdown with former world number one Naomi Osaka. Gauff's path to the round of 16 was marked by a convincing victory over Magdalena Frech, while Osaka overcame Daria Kasatkina.

Unseeded Jaume Munar is enjoying his most successful performance at a Grand Slam, advancing in the tournament. Ekaterina Alexandrova, the Russian 13th seed, also made it to the second week in New York, surrendering just 10 games en route to her victory.

Ukrainian 27th seed Marta Kostyuk overcame France's Diane Parry in three sets, while Jelena Ostapenko's opponent in the round of 16 was Ostapenko herself, following the retirement of her opponent.

Several players also advanced when their opponents retired, including Lorenzo Musetti, Leandro Riedi, and Alex de Minaur. Riedi, in particular, became the lowest-ranked man to reach the fourth round of a major since 2002.

In a closely contested match, Swiatek, the six-time major winner and 2022 US Open champion, showed great resolve to dig herself out of trouble against Russian 29th seed Anna Kalinskaya, winning their match 7-6 (7/2), 6-4.

The men's draw saw three more retirements on Saturday, following the injury-induced exit of sixth seed Ben Shelton the day before. Notable among them was the retirement of Flavio Cobolli, who was trailing 10th seed Musetti 6-3, 6-4.

In the women's draw, Wimbledon runner-up and eighth seed Amanda Anisimova beat Romania's Jaqueline Cristian 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, while Hong Kong's Coleman Wong saw his run ended by a five-set loss to 15th seed Andrey Rublev.

The last-16 match between Osaka and Gauff will be a repeat of their first meeting at the US Open in 2019, when Osaka overpowered the then 15-year-old Gauff in straight sets. Sinner, the world number one, is also trying to make history, as he rallies to retain the title in New York since Roger Federer in 2008.

The tournament continues to offer surprises and exciting matches, with the last-16 matches promising to be thrilling encounters. Sinner awaits the winner of the evening session match between US 14th seed Tommy Paul and Alexander Bublik, the 23rd seed from Kazakhstan. Karolina Muchova, who won an all-Czech encounter with Linda Noskova 6-7 (5/7), 6-4, 6-2, is also waiting for her next opponent. The US Open 2022 is shaping up to be an unforgettable tournament.
