Tensions rise as the first India-Pakistan match in the Asia Cup occurs following a military conflict
The much-anticipated Asia Cup 2023 is set to commence on Tuesday, with a host of cricket powerhouses gearing up for the tournament in the United Arab Emirates. Among the participating teams are India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, making it an exciting event for fans worldwide.
The tournament, which consists of a group stage, a Super Four round, and a final, will see Group A comprising India, Pakistan, hosts UAE, and Oman. Group B, on the other hand, will feature Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, and Sri Lanka.
India, the defending Asia Cup champions, will be led by Suryakumar Yadav in the tournament. The team has a strong record against Pakistan, with a 10-3 win record in T20 internationals. However, Pakistan will be without key players Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan due to poor form.
The two countries have not played a bilateral series on either side's soil since 2012, but they will clash on September 14 in Dubai as part of the Asia Cup. It is important to note that the countries have recently been embroiled in an intense four-day conflict in May, their worst since 1999.
Retired Indian players withdrew from their semifinal with Pakistan in the World Championship of Legends in July-August in England, adding to the tension between the two nations. However, Pakistani bowling great Wasim Akram has advised both teams to remain disciplined and focus on the game.
Hong Kong, Oman, and the UAE qualified for the tournament by finishing in the top three of the ACC men's Premier Cup. Afghanistan will open the tournament against minnows Hong Kong in Abu Dhabi.
The teams participating in the Super Four round of the Asia Cup from September 18 to 23 will be the top two from Group A (A1 and A2) and Group B (B1 and B2). The specific team names were not finalized at the time of writing.
The Asia Cup, which includes five full members of the Asian Cricket Council, is a significant event in the cricket calendar. The last encounter between India and Pakistan took place in the 50-over Champions Trophy, held in Dubai, in February, with India emerging victorious.
As the Asia Cup 2023 approaches, fans are eagerly waiting to witness the intense rivalry between India and Pakistan on the cricket field. The tournament promises to deliver exciting matches and thrilling moments, making it a must-watch event for cricket enthusiasts.
