Tesla's China Sales Show Mixed Results in August

Tesla's sales in China have shown a mixed performance in August, with a 9.93% decline compared to the same month in 2024, according to the company's latest data. This marks a 6.91% decrease in total sales for the first eight months of 2025, compared to the same period in 2024.

However, the company has seen a notable increase in its market share within the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) sector in China. In August, Tesla captured 5.19% of the NEV market, up from 4.12% in July. The Shanghai Gigafactory, which produces the Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV, exported 26,040 vehicles in August, although this represents a 22.6% decline in total exports from January to August, compared to last year.

Despite these figures, Tesla's market share in China's NEV sector in September 2025 is not explicitly stated in the available data. The company faces strong competition, including from Xiaomi, which received about 240,000 orders for its SU7 model in just 18 hours, nearly matching Tesla's total China sales in the first half of 2025.

In terms of specific models, the Model 3 saw a 10.23% month-on-month rise in sales, but a 20.02% year-on-year decrease. The Model Y, on the other hand, led Tesla's wholesale deliveries in August with 58,888 units, a 4.58% year-on-year increase and a 28.47% month-on-month rise.

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 686,000 of the total sales from January to August, representing a 17.2% increase. Tesla claimed 8.33% of the BEV market in August, rising from 6.69% the month prior.

It's worth noting that the production cycle typically prioritizes exports in the first half of each quarter and shifts focus to domestic deliveries later on. The new Model Y L has reportedly been receiving 10,000 orders per day in China, suggesting potential for stronger results in September.

Overall, while Tesla's sales in China have shown a decline in the first eight months of 2025, the company has managed to increase its market share within the NEV sector and has seen growth in its Model Y sales. The competition, however, remains strong, with companies like Xiaomi making significant strides in the market.
