Test scores from AP and IB exams show an upward trend at Hellgate High School
In a world where college admissions are becoming increasingly competitive, students at Hellgate High School are making significant strides in their academic pursuits. A recent surge in the number of students taking Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) exams is a testament to this shift.
According to data from the school, there are 100 more students at Hellgate taking an AP or IB exam compared to last year. This trend is partly driven by the test-optional movement in college admissions, a movement that has gained momentum due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Schools like Hellgate High School and other local institutions are waiving standardized tests such as the ACT, SAT, AP, or IB exams and instead focusing on these advanced assessments.
For senior Gilly Millar, the decision to take two IB tests and one AP test this spring was a no-brainer. Millar, who is planning to attend college after high school, believes that passing these exams can earn college credit, making the extra effort worthwhile.
However, not all students at Hellgate are choosing to take the AP/IB exams. Some are enrolled in these rigorous courses but opt out of the exams. AP Chemistry teacher Lisa Ratz, whose class is geared towards the AP test, notes a half and half split among her students regarding those who choose to take the exam and those who do not.
Ratz encourages students to take the exam because it exposes them to a lot more topics and helps them leave high school more well-rounded. IB English year two teacher Anna Bacon shares a similar sentiment, stating that students should try taking the exam because it is difficult but provides good practice for college-bound students.
Bacon and Ratz are not alone in their belief that success on standardized tests, such as the ACT, SAT, AP, or IB exams, can predict future college success. AP Coordinator Nuttall echoes this sentiment, stating that success on these exams can resemble college finals and provide valuable preparation.
However, it's important to note that different colleges view AP/IB exams differently. Some accept them and others view them as prerequisites in the admissions process. Bacon advises students to check the policies of the colleges they are applying to regarding AP/IB acceptance.
The increased participation in AP and IB exams at Hellgate High School is a clear indication that the trend towards test-optional admissions might be temporary. As students continue to strive for academic excellence and college readiness, it seems that the popularity of AP and IB exams will continue to grow.
