Thailand's prime minister is ousted by the court
Thailand's political landscape has taken a turn for the uncertain following the removal of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra by the country's constitutional court. The court's decision, which was a 6-3 ruling, comes after a petition by opposition senators over a leaked phone call regarding a border dispute with Cambodia.
Paetongtarn Shinawatra, a political novice who became prime minister barely a year ago, is the third member of her family to be removed from office. Her father, Thaksin, was ousted in 2006, and her aunt, Yingluck, followed in 2014.
The court stated that Paetongtarn Shinawatra put her private interests before the nation's, damaging the country's reputation. The Shinawatra political dynasty, once a powerful force in Thai politics, may have lost some of its luster following this latest development.
The removal of the prime minister is likely to cause political and economic uncertainty in Thailand. The country's economy, which has been struggling, may be further impacted by the political instability.
In the meantime, the deputy prime minister will serve as the caretaker prime minister until a new one is chosen. There are five people eligible to become the next prime minister, with only one being from Pheu Thai, the party that Paetongtarn Shinawatra led.
Thailand's relationship with the U.S., its oldest treaty ally in Southeast Asia, is not expected to change in the short term. The U.S. is Thailand's largest export destination, though China is its No. 1 trading partner overall.
The border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia, which resulted in intense fighting in July, leaving dozens dead and hundreds of thousands displaced, has added to the political turmoil in the country.
There is no set date for the selection of a new prime minister, and the future of Thai politics remains uncertain. As the country navigates these challenging times, it will be important for all parties to work towards stability and economic recovery.
