"The Beatles have piqued his interest and now occupied his enthusiasm."
In the heart of Cambridge, UK, in December 1994, photographer Jill Furmanovsky captured her first shots of a band that would soon make waves across the music industry. That band was none other than Oasis, a group that would later be compared to the Beatles by Furmanovsky herself.
At the time, Oasis was still relatively unknown, but Furmanovsky, inspired by the documentary work of Alfred Wertheimer on young Elvis Presley, saw something special in them. Little did she know that this chance encounter would lead to a long and rewarding relationship.
Fast forward to 1997, and Oasis was at the height of its fame, described as "the craziest thing since sliced bread." Noel Gallagher, known for his acid remarks that delight journalists, was 30 years old, while Liam Gallagher, recognised for his unique vocal and scenic style, was just 25. Liam's defiant gaze was never far from sight, while Noel's half-closed clear blue eyes bore an impenetrable look.
Furmanovsky found photographing Oasis in her 40s particularly rewarding. It allowed her to utilise various aspects of her work, including photojournalism, studio work, and portraits. The cover of her Oasis collection, titled "Oasis: Trying to Find a Way Out of Nowhere. 1994-2009/2025", features the two faces of the Gallagher brothers side by side.
However, the tumultuous relationship between the Gallagher brothers has been a subject of interest for the English press since the early days of Oasis. A final dispute backstage at the Rock en Seine festival in August 2009 marked the end of the band.
Jill Furmanovsky, born in 1953, regrets not being able to photograph the Beatles due to chronological reasons. Yet, her work speaks for itself, having captured notable musicians such as Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, the Sex Pistols, the Pretenders, and Blondie, in addition to Oasis.
Furmanovsky's admiration for photographers Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Alfred Wertheimer is evident in her work. Her collection on Oasis was published by Seghers on September 25, offering a unique insight into the band's rise and fall.
